ABORT Event
The ABORT event records that an animal's pregnancy ended and resulted in a loss of the fetus. Expand the sections below to learn more:
Event Guidelines
Use the mobile app or the web version of PULSE to enter events! Tap Events in the mobile app to get started, or see Add Events to learn more about adding events from web. PULSE supports adding events that have occurred within the last year.
The app expects you to add pregnant females to this event, so it will not allow you to add an animal that is not in the PREG Pregnant reproduction status.

Abort Date/Days (ABDAT)
Select this field to choose the abortion date from a calendar or enter the days since the abortion occurred. Do not enter a date or number of days that occurs before the conception date, before the last PREG event, after the last breeding date, or more than 300 days before the current date.
Reproduction Code (REPRO CODE)
When entering an ABORT event for an animal, the animal will no longer remain in PREG status. Tap this field to select the new reproduction code:
- If the animal’s DDAT Dry date=0, select one of the following reproduction codes: No Bred, Fresh, Open/OK, or Bred.
- If the animal’s DDAT>0, select one of the following reproduction codes: No Bred, Fresh, Open/OK, Bred, or Dry.
Lactation Cycle
If an animal is not eligible to start a new lactation cycle, the app does not display this field. If an animal is eligible to start a new lactation cycle, tap this field to Continue Current Lactation or Start New Lactation. An animal is only eligible to start a new lactation if it is DRY or its DCC Days carrying calf/pregnant is greater than 152 days.
Process Changes
When you process changes in the mobile app, it sends your updates to PULSE and then on to DairyComp 305 for DairyComp Unlimited dairies (WiFi or data connection required).
When the updates are received, the following changes for each animal in the event are processed:

Event day to the date the event was completed in the mobile app.
- Changes the breeding result of the last BRED event to A (ABORT) and sets the CDAT Conception date and SIRC Sire of conception to 0 (zero).
- Updates the RPRO Reproductive code code to the one selected in the mobile app.
- Leaves the lactation cycle unchanged OR starts a new lactation cycle, depending on which option was selected in the mobile app.
- Sets the ABDAT Abortion date and the ADDAT Abortion Determination Date.
While the ABDAT (Abortion Date) is usually set to a time in the past, the ADDAT (Abortion Determination Date) records when the ABORT event was executed. For example, if today is 11/19/2019 and you run a vet list to check a cow for DRY confirmation, but you see that she aborted some time in the past and is now OPEN, you might estimate that the ABORT event occurred 90 days ago. In this case, the ABDAT (ABORT Date) is the ADDAT (11/19/2019) – 90.
